Instead of filing separate applications in different countries, e.g. one in the US, one in China, and one in Japan, etc. it is possible to file a single International patent application designating 142 countries including those mentioned above. Eventually the single International patent application must be converted to separate applications in different countries, but the client can benefit from delaying costs of separate applications by 18 months or more.

Also, the International patent application process has a centralised procedure for search of information relevant to the patentability of the claimed invention, and examination of the application, amendment of the application, and publication.
